Now that we have explored the historical context of the US Constitution, can we now better understand the intent behind the writing of the Preamble? Watch the video and/or read the text below...
"We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America."
Many of us have simply memorized the words, without taking into account the historical context. What was life like under the Articles of Confederation that might elicit such a paragraph?
