How can we rename the concepts illustrated in Guns, Germs, and Steel (which are proximate causes) to better reflect the importance of ultimate causes?
Instead of GGS (guns, germs, steel),
Think of GAA:
1. Geography
2. Agriculture
3. Animals
Think about proximate versus ultimate factors in answering our focus question: “Why were the Europeans, despite their small numbers, able to conquer the Native Americans?”

1. SEE - Observation
2. THINK - Interpretation- Naked Native Americans (it gets cold!)
--> nudity = ignorance (think of Adam & Eve)
--> Explorers often painted the N.A. naked while N.A. painted themselves with clothes

When I think of America, I think of the American dream. People come to America to change their luck because anyone can make it in America. For me, I think that “making it” in America means the getting the “white picket fence”. The dream is to have a big house, a comfortable amount of money, and a happy family. The idea is that in America anyone can get an education and work their way to the top. Soon they will be commuting from their upper middle class neighborhood in the suburbs in a shiny new car. When I think of America, I think of the postcard picture of the happy home.
